The Portland Art Museum is having an exhibition of Greek and Roman sculptures from the British Museum. Since I am taking a figure drawing class now, I thought it would be a good idea to practice on some well-lit, motionless forms. I'm trying to see and draw the planes in forms.
A week ago, I sketched Hercules and the discus thrower...
Then I sketched some facial parts...
Next, I decided to just focus on his torso...but those contours by the ribs are backwards and his waist is way too narrow...
I decided I needed to focus on torsos, so a drew a youth...
These are from my figure drawing class at PNCA... Week 2:
Week 3:
A few of these lines are instructive lines from my teachers...
I definitely need to work on the neck next time!!
The torso seems a bit twisty, but I kind of like the arm...
Lots and lots to work on!!

WOW!!! Vicky your drawings are wonderful.Very 'classic' in style.
I don't see the mistakes, only you do. You must be working very hard
in your class.
Thanks, Linda. You're very kind. Drawing at the museum made me think about how many others probably have drawn from those sculptures through the ages. The class I'm taking is the best art class I've ever had and sometimes it seems like I can feel my brain working. It's a real challenge for me, but I love it.
You now, I notice problems the same as you when I start looking at pictures of what I drew. I take pictures of my drawings and paintings as I progress through and try to spot my errors. The photos help somehow. I have to get over to the museum sometime to check out those greek sculptures.
That's a good idea, Marco. I think I'll take more photos and do more fixes.
Love these! It is good to see a place for improvement in our drawings and to push us but these are very satisfying to look at as is. The week 2 poses seem very challenging but you have captured them wonderfully.
Thank you so much, Deb.
