Every Day Sketches

Once again, a friend and I have challenged each other to try to make at least one sketch each day in November. Here are some that I feel comfortable posting.

 Some have been mundane...

Some have been sketched while I've waited...

Sometimes I've sketched looking out windows...

or on a walk...

I've gone to figure drawing sessions...

I've drawn plants....

and I've drawn with friends...

(If you look closely on the teapot lid, you'll see the reflections of some sketchers. You'll have to trust me on this.)

About two weeks into the challenge, I felt pressured to sketch and was counting the days left in the month. Then in about the third week, I was back in the swing of things and it was easy to find a subject to draw. Lots of times, I'd start planning what I might sketch the next day. Like any habit, it gets easier with time and eventually, a day doesn't feel complete until I've sketched.

Grab Bag

This post is made up of some sketches from the last month or so.

Our son got married recently. I sketched my very comfortable wedding shoes and a bag full of last minute supplies to take to the wedding: bandaids, safety pins, needle and thread, medicine, handywipes, extra pantyhose, and even more, including duct tape. Luckily, very few of the things were needed.

The Urban Sketchers Portland group had a sketchcrawl at Powell's recently. I sketched the sketchbook display on the top floor, ...

along with a few sketchers.

 

In the semi-darkness of Jimmy Mak's, I sketched some of the listeners...

and some of the Mel Brown Septet...

On a chilly day, sitting in the car, I sketched The Bakery Bar and colored it with markers.

My Own Private NaNoDrawMo

A friend and I decided to try to do a drawing for each day in November, but we won't be posting them to the NaNoDrawMo site. Here's what I have so far (not counting the Japanese Gardens and Leaves that I already posted this month).

 I never quite know what these sketches look like until I look at them the next day in the light.

I've been practicing perspective. It's kind of like doing sit-ups.

When I see these larger, I can usually spot some of the flaws.

I tippy living room scene.

We put together some shelves. I decided to practice perspective before we put them both against the wall. We were better at  assembling them than it looks like in the sketch; the low one wasn't really that warped.

This isn't the first time I've drawn this wooden basket and it won't be the last. Maybe I'll get it right someday.

I drew these by freezing frames on t.v. It sure would be useful to freeze frame real life. I think it's time for a figure or face drawing class.
