Every Day Sketches

Once again, a friend and I have challenged each other to try to make at least one sketch each day in November. Here are some that I feel comfortable posting.

 Some have been mundane...

Some have been sketched while I've waited...

Sometimes I've sketched looking out windows...

or on a walk...

I've gone to figure drawing sessions...

I've drawn plants....

and I've drawn with friends...

(If you look closely on the teapot lid, you'll see the reflections of some sketchers. You'll have to trust me on this.)

About two weeks into the challenge, I felt pressured to sketch and was counting the days left in the month. Then in about the third week, I was back in the swing of things and it was easy to find a subject to draw. Lots of times, I'd start planning what I might sketch the next day. Like any habit, it gets easier with time and eventually, a day doesn't feel complete until I've sketched.

Funny how after I'm finished, then I can see the mistakes. (The back of the mouth of the cup is too wide and crooked.) I could blame it on the potter, but that wouldn't be fair, because it's really quite perfectly formed.

Scavenger Hunt: hydrant, bike pile, musician (with a little shoe distraction)

Here are some more sketches from the Urban Sketchers Scavenger Hunt. I drew several fire hydrants, thinking I would get a better one, but I think I just got more fire hydrants.

The most challenging item so far, has been the bike pile.

The best thing about the bike pile is it's near Fluevog shoes and they were gracious enough to let a few of us sketch inside. Their shoes, in all the different shapes and colors were really fun to draw, even if they weren't on the Scavenger Hunt list.

This next shoe, was designed by Urban Sketcher Correspondent,  Zaza . You, too, can enter their Open Source shoe design contest and maybe get a prize and a shoe named after you. I'm already imagining 'The Vicky', winning enough to buy a gorgeous pair of sandals that I have my eyes on.

We go out to hear a lot of live music, so I sketch musicians often, but I thought I'd post a slightly different one, and test the rules to this hunt.  I'm trying to learn how to use Brushes on my iphone and this is an early attempt.

The scavenger hunt has been fun because we search for certain items and then notice things that we wouldn't have otherwise. of course, sometimes we're taken down a path of distraction, and that can be good, too.

Shoe Grid

Cute Shoes...Monday, I went out with friends and we went shoe shopping (or at least looking and trying them on). They were real  shoe connoisseurs compared to me  and I tried things that I normally wouldn't look at. Tuesday, I went shopping again and this time I found a fairly practical pair and bought them.

I remember as a kid, I usually had just a few pairs of shoes at a time: oxfords (groan), red ball Keds (fun), patent leather Mary Janes (for dress-up like recitals), and flipflops (called thongs, then). I loved trying on my mom's fancy high heels. Now, I just want something comfortable...and kinda cute.
